The Rise of the Smartphone in the UK

Good things still take time. Some of the most popular modern gadgets have actually been around for years. Take for instance the smartphone. Few technophiles are aware of the fact that the smartphone was introduced in 1992. That's right! Of course, those early models bear little resemblance to the high-tech devices of today.

Today, smartphones are the fastest growing sector of the mobile phone market. At last count, there were thirteen million adult subscribers in the UK, which is almost a quarter of all adult mobile phone users. When we read more tech smartphone news here we find that most subscribers purchase these devices over traditional mobile phones due to internet access.

While most modern mobile phones give users access to the internet, they cannot compare to smartphones. After all, a smartphone is really nothing more than a mini computer that lets owners access the web wherever they are. These devices also let users download and store information, since they have more memory than the standard mobile phone.

The Smartphone craze began in earnest with the launch of the iPhone in 2007. Well over three million of them have been moved in under three years. In addition to surfing the web, users also download popular applications. Apple recently announced that users had downloaded over 3 billion apps since 2007.

One vexing discrepancy is the gender gap. About seventy-five percent of smartphone owners are men. No one is quite sure why this is.
